From the first whistle to the final buzzer, Virginia Beach High School Water Polo has always been more than a team—it’s a lifelong community. The high school water polo experience has opened up temendous opportunities for student athletes and changed lives for the better. Our alumni carry forward a tradition of discipline, camaraderie, and competitive excellence that extends well beyond the pool.
Over the years, VBHS Water Polo players have continued their athletic and academic journeys at the highest levels, competing in Division I and club programs at schools such as Pepperdine, Grove City, the University of Alabama, Delta College Athletics (California), James Madison University, Virginia Tech, United States Naval Academy Men's & Womens Club and beyond—including master’s-level competition. Their success reflects the strength of the foundation built here.

But no matter where life takes them, our alumni remain an essential part of the VBHS Water Polo family. Each winter holiday season, we proudly host our annual Alumni Game—a time-honored tradition where past and present players come together to reconnect, compete, and celebrate the program’s legacy.

One "Yes" Changed Everything: The Story of Maddox Todd
Maddox Todd grew up as a dedicated swimmer, but only tried water polo when teammates encouraged him to during a local high school season. He excelled quickly, earning a spot at the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics and later "Offensive Player of the Year" honors in the Virginia Beach High School Water Polo League. As an experience swimmer, Sandbridge Ocean Rescue Association Lifeguard, water polo was a great fit. Heading into his senior year uncertain about what came next, he got an unexpected call from a Delta College coach who'd spotted him on the Junior Olympics roster—leading him to California, where he went on to thrive as a student-athlete.
